Understanding the Sign Gifts

What is your view of the miraculous gifts (like prophecy and the gifts of tongues) in the New Testament period? Did these discontinue with the closing of the Scriptural Canon or, maybe, they took on a new form after this? And how did the Scriptures relate to the work of the prophets in the New Testament?

  1. Some very wise comments. It does seem that your comments about the purpose of spiritual gifts is focused on the public use of gifts. You are correct that Paul emphasizes the edification of the church as the primary purpose of gifts in the gathered community. In the case of tongues, however, he seems to recognize that there is also a private purpose to tongues (personal edification, 1 Cor. 14:4). There might be other manifestations of spiritual gifts that do not occur in the context of the gathered community (evangelistic situations ??). Maybe God could give insight to a person while witnessing to the someone. The point is that I don’t think we can limit the work of the Spirit to guidelines given in 1 Cor. 12 thru 14 where he is dealing with disorder in the gathered meetings.
